Mentor Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Establishes, with the mentee, the mentee's explicit goals and objectives

  • Takes the initiative in the relationship, but allows the mentee to take responsibility for their growth, development, and career planning

  • Commits to fostering the relationship for the specified period of time

  • Actively listens to mentee

  • Provides frank, honest, and constructive feedback

  • Provides encouragement and assists the mentee in identifying professional development activities

  • Maintains confidentiality

  • Reviews goals and objectives of the relationship with the mentee midway and at the end 

  • Follows through on commitments made to mentee

  • Respects mentee's limits

  • Explicitly states one’s own limits and boundaries 

  • Recognizes and works through conflicts in caring ways, invites discussion on differences with the mentee, and arranges for a third party to assist, if necessary

  • Makes only positive or neutral comments about the mentee to others;

  • Maintains a professional relationship that doesn't intrude on the mentee's personal life; 

  • Ends the relationship at the agreed upon time

Time commitment 

Mentor and mentees commit to 3 sessions between January 23 - March 17, 2023, ideally meeting once every 2-3 weeks. GMG will coordinate and schedule each session.

  • Duration: 45 min - 1 hour.
    Focused discussion on a topic, questions and answers, and clear feedback or guidance provided by the mentor.

  • By the end of the program, mentors are expected to provide at least one introduction to a professional related to their interests

  • Total mentor time in meetings: 3 hours

    • Preparation:

      Mentors are expected to prepare in advance for each meeting by familiarizing themselves with the Onboarding presentation, mentoring resources and session planners provided by GMG

  • Total mentor time preparing for the session: 2 hours

Total mentor time commitment over 2 months: ~6 hours

Engagements can continue after the 2 months of the mentorship program ends if both parties agree, but this will be outside of the scope of the agreed program, will not be supported or the responsibility of GMG or the partner company, nor included in the evaluation and final report.
